Open Call For Artists:
THE COLOR IS RED Juried Show
Exhibition Dates: April 9th-May 9th
Deadline for submission is: Friday, March 5th, 2010
Black Dot Cafe Gallery invites artists working in oil, acrylics, collage, watercolors, printmaking, photography, illustration, and other 2-dimensional media to submit work for a juried exhibition called The Color Is Red. Works must be no bigger than 12 inches in height and width.
Curatorial Statement:
Considered a power color, Red is the color of passion, blood, and is often found on ceremonial clothing for rituals in many cultures around the world. In books, we've heard characters described as 'seeing red' to punctuate an angry, livid moment. But of course, red also symbolizes love when on a rose. Women wear red dresses to stand out in a crowd, while a red light district is known to be a place where sex sells. Red in some Southern quilts is supposed to evoke magic, while red is also the costume color of the popular winter icon santa claus and the religious imagery of the devil. Red, is also the color of Dorothy's shoes in the WIZard of Oz. Red is also the color of politics. In visual work, red is said to draw the attention of the eye to a particular detail. What significance does the color Red have for you in your life? How does the color Red function in your work? We seek artists who use Red in their creative works with purpose---both a little and a lot. Work by emerging artists is encouraged.
