Attention Black Bike Riders.
(and to the non black riders, please tell your black friends, solidarity helps us all)

Ever been on one of the many organized bike rides in LA, seen another black person and thought "Would it be weird If I say hi?".

It isn't weird, and you should say hi. This is your chance.

I'm pleased to announce the FREEDOM RIDES. This one is for the brothers and sisters.

I want to invite all black riders of every skill set, regardless of bike (road, track, cruiser, mountain) to come and meet your fellow Black, bike enthusiasts. Take a ride around Los Angeles with us, Sunday Feb 22nd. We will be meeting at Bikestyler Customs on Melrose and Larchmont at noon. We start pedaling at 1pm. (NO CP TIME haha!)

Route TBA.

CONTACT JAMES (AT) AFROPUNK (DOT) COM with questions, comments, sugeestions etc.

I wish you guys could be on LAFIXED.com i posted this same annoucement this morning and already got 97 responses. Some people are really upset others get it. But it is causing a lot of conversation.

here is a sampling.

Why would it be weird to say hi to a fellow cyclist?
#
In Switzerland a "black rider" is a person who gets on a bus or tram without buying a ticket from the machine at the stop.
#
If I'm from south africa, but white, can I attend?
#
It says Black, not Africa American, so that would be a NO!
Isn't that kind of racist?
#
this is a joke, right?
#
i feel so left out now =[
#
segregated bike rides or racist right? oh wait, yeah they are.
#
quanmunisthow about a minority ride. i'm vietnamese, and want to be included.
#
We already included you in a pointless war. What more could you want?
#
I have chameleon power= Puerto Rican!
Hoooooo!
#
you gotta be kidding me. . .

. . .this ride is a joke, right???
#
English is a color too!
#
i'm totally attending this ride.
#
i don't understand why it would be hard or weird to say hi to a fellow "black rider". just like it's not
weird to say hi to a "white rider" or "asian rider" or "mexican rider". . . et cetera. the color of your
skin isn't keeping me from saying hello. it's the cowardly-lion inside me; cause i'm too shy to say hi.
#
I'm mixed, so do I leave half myself at home? I think it appropriate if we allow one white person to join the ride, just so he can haul my halfy self so I can participate in the ride. I'll spray paint the white person black if it'll be a problem, but be warned he'll totally look like a rattle can job. I don't think I should have a black person carry me around our ancestors have done waaayyy too much and suffered enough so that some poor modern black person has to do some work. C

Can't wait to celebrate half my heritage in true solidarity!

Hey James,
This nothng new. I was an avid bike racer in the 1990s, and got a lot of hostility from a lot of White racers. I rode with a Black bike club out of Leimert Park called Major Motion - named after the famous Black bike racer Marshall "Major" Taylor. They still roll out every weekend - Saturday is the beginners ride and Sunday is the big dog, keep up or get dropped ride. Quite a few State and national champions got their start here, including the current national champion Rahsaan Bahati...

They've been getting down since 1975... Check it...

I hate when people toss that stuff out how it's racist to have anything black....

"segregated bike rides or racist right? oh wait, yeah they are."

That just sounds like some white power douchebag who wants to grasp too hard at how black people are just as bad as the historical white agenda.

The bike ride isn't "segregated" if it's just fellow black people looking to connect. It's not like we're treating people like animals and making them use the lesser resources. It's a fucking BIKE RIDE.

Next thing you know they'll be saying Kwanzaa's racist. Whatever.

And isn't black a blanket term for people of african decent? Not all colored people in America are from Africa in general... I prefer using the term black... I dunno why.

And if I was in LA... I'd totally come with my bike.

AND ON ANOTHER UNRELATED SUBJECT I'M LOOKING FOR A COOL PERSON TO RENT A ROOM FROM when I'm NYC round March 4th Let me know. LATE

I just don't speak because I'm not a "biker", and hate when people whiz by me and/or look down upon me for not being a "I just rode 400 miles and broke my records of 399" kinda person..

I call myself black too. I think that is just generation speak.

I am a member of the breakfast group here in seattle and we just had Edward Ewing give a presentation about a movement he's trying to do based on Major Taylor. I will have that podcast posted up this week.
